A sensible first response
Keep native maples, tolerate modest leaf feeding, and leave some undisturbed soil beneath trees for pupation. Let resting moths depart on their own.
When to look
This record is dated April 9. Southern populations fly from spring into late summer; mountain timing varies with elevation and weather.
Identification
All five images show the same diagnostic combination: a thick yellow furry thorax, pink wing bases and margins, and a broad pale-yellow central wing area. IMG_8552 provides the closest detail; the other four establish the resting shape from different angles.
Lookalikes & limits
Pink prominents have a different wing pattern. Species identification is well supported; sex and whether all five files show one individual are not established.
In the garden
Caterpillars eat maple foliage and enter the woodland food web. Adults do not feed, so this adult should not be described as a nectar pollinator.
